John C. Pennington, 1968
Here is the jpg of John Pennington. I took it about March or April of '68 in the mountains south of Da Nang somewhere, where we were working with a team that had found a bunker complex there. This was after Hue of course, where John had really gotten into the battle on the trip with Gus that was the basis for those parts of the book (The Short-Timers). We never knew exactly what John did in the week of fighting that made Gus so grateful to him, John was very talkative in some ways but not really about things relating to relationships with others. We only heard a few words that implied he & Gus had gone through something together, but if John really saved Gus's life (as the young photographer does for Joker in the movie) he never mentioned it.
